2026 is Quake‘s 30th anniversary and, to celebrate it, at MachineGames, in collaboration with id Software, they’ve created a new episode for the game. Called Dawn of the Machine, it builds on the two previous episodes they made before, Dimension of the Machine and Dimension of the Past, fusing the franchise’s classic design with new weapons, enemies, and some singular design tricks never seen before. For example, teleportation between different points of the level with no apparent loading times. Something supposedly impossible in the game’s engine.
An episode of nightmares
The setup is simple, but terrifying. Ranger, the protagonist, is trapped in a dimension of endless illusions, reliving a cycle of infinite violence, dying thousands of times in an attempt to escape. Battered, but not beaten, he hears rumors of the Machine of Nightmares, which could be the key to his salvation.
With 19 new maps, a new soundtrack, a custom hub, new maps for deathmatch, and a whole campaign to tie it all together, this has been the big announcement at QuakeCon this year. A true tribute to one of the greatest FPS games in history, which keeps proving it isn’t running out of steam despite its age. And seeing that its fandom keeps growing over the years and won’t give up on the game anytime soon, it seems obvious that we still have a good few decades of Quake ahead of us.
