Reacher Season 4 could finally fix the show’s most overused story habit

Prime Video’s Reacher Season 4 will adapt Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow, which gives the show a case that’s less personal, moves the action to Philadelphia, and leans into a mystery with more twists. After a run of stories built around Jack Reacher landing in a new place, uncovering a conspiracy, and then getting dragged in by something from his past, this next chapter is expected to open with a suspicious incident on the subway and put him back in motion through chance, instinct, and his refusal to let something slide.

That’s a shift from the recent pattern. In the earlier stories, you watched Jack Reacher roll into a new town, find the rot underneath, and then get pulled even deeper because the case hit close to home, his brother’s murder in Reacher Season 1 and the killings of his former military colleagues in Reacher Season 2. This time, the story is expected to start with that unsettling subway encounter and let chance, sharp instincts, and Reacher’s habit of stepping in drive everything that follows.

And that’s where it gets interesting. This is usually when Jack Reacher works best: not as a man chasing revenge, but as a force of nature, moved by justice, observation, and action. If the formula had started to feel a little too familiar, this change could be the thing that freshens it up.

The old formula still clearly works, though. Reacher is a hit, Season 5 was ordered before Season 4 has even aired, and Reacher Season 3 became Prime Video’s most-watched returning season within 19 days, with 56% of its audience coming from outside the US, according to Prime Video. Even so, critics and Lee Child have both pointed out that constantly changing locations and rotating casts can weaken continuity and leave the supporting characters less memorable.

You can stream Reacher on Prime Video, and Season 4 is already laying the groundwork for Season 5 through the kind of thing Jack Reacher never ignores.
