Reports indicate that the Nintendo Switch 2 has just entered production… and one more thing

The latest round of rumors about Nintendo Switch 2 suggests that the next Nintendo console has entered mass production. This means that the Japanese console is already being manufactured to be put on sale in a few months.

Or so claims David Gibson, senior analyst at MST Financial, who has tweeted something interesting about Nintendo’s main assembler, Hosiden.

‘It seems that no one has noticed Nintendo’s assembler: Hosiden is spending 2 billion yen on production equipment and 1 billion yen on automation in the fiscal year 3/25 for its main client in the entertainment sector (Nintendo),’ writes Gibson. And he adds that he expects ‘news in September and the launch in March 2025 for [the] next device.’

The chart included in the post effectively shows an increase in automation spending, as well as the incorporation of spending on production equipment and a new factory based in Vietnam. In any case, it indicates that some type of hardware manufacturing could be underway at the assembler based in Osaka.

In related news, discovered by VGC, industry leaker Nate the Hate stated that Nintendo Switch 2 ‘has backward compatibility’ with the original Nintendo Switch.

This is not the first time we hear about the possibility of backward compatibility support in Nintendo’s successor console. Last year, a Nintendo executive hinted at the backward compatibility of Nintendo Switch 2 during an annual shareholder Q&A session.

At that moment, they had said: ‘With Nintendo Switch, we can directly connect with multiple customers through Nintendo Accounts. In the transition from Nintendo Switch to the next generation console. We will do our best to make the transition smooth for our customers.’

Although it does not outright confirm the backward compatibility of Nintendo Switch 2, the idea of a smoother transition (at least compared to people who make the leap from the disc-based Wii U to the cartridge-compatible Switch) could indicate that things like Nintendo Switch games and Nintendo Switch Online accounts could be transferred to the new console.

In addition, Nintendo has traditionally held a Nintendo Direct in September every year. If that precedent is maintained this year, we could finally see an official announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 this month.
