Since the day Robin Williams committed suicide, the world is much less fun. The absolute hurricane of comedy that the actor was remains unmatched to this day, and in an industry with absolute self-awareness, it is impossible for us to have someone like him again. However, at the time not everyone saw him in a good light, because I suppose you have to do everything in the lord’s village: this is the case of Sally Field.
Neither lady nor gentleman
The actress just revealed, on Stephen Colbert’s show, that she was immune to his jokes during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire, and she didn’t understand why the rest of the world was so into the game: “I never laughed, ever. And everyone else did and moved on”. Williams, who always took pride in making anyone laugh, was extremely frustrated with her and desperately tried to make her laugh. It didn’t go well.
“It drove me crazy, honestly. But it wasn’t fun, it just wasn’t fun!”, said the actress, knowing she would come off as a villain to the rest of the audience. “Robin was always trying to do something different to make people laugh. It was so unfunny, you can’t believe it. And then Pierce, the incredible Pierce Brosnan, we were sitting at a restaurant table and he farted with his arm. And I was dying of laughter”. Williams looked at her and said “Oh, IS THAT what it takes?”. Classic.
It should be noted that during the filming, Field’s father passed away, and he was possibly not in the mood to accept it. Williams halted the filming so that he could attend the funeral and accompanied him home, so he may not have accepted his humor, but he did accept his humanity. Because in an industry full of sewer rats, Robin Williams was the light that guided them all towards good.
