We are slowly learning more details about the next version of Windows, code named “Threshold.” We already know that there’s a new Start Menu coming, which will be familiar to desktop users. The latest rumor is that Microsoft will be getting rid of the Charms bar from desktop versions of Windows 9.

Charms button concept by WinBeta.orgWinBeta reports Microsoft is trying different methods to get rid of the Charms bar for desktop users, which include adding a button to next to the window controls. Many Modern UI applications downloaded from the Windows Store rely on Charms to access specific settings so it’ll be interesting to see how the company reconciles this.

It makes sense for Microsoft to get rid of the Charms bar on desktop. While the concept works extremely well on tablets, it just doesn’t translate for mouse and keyboard users. On a tablet, you can invoke the Charms bar by swiping in from the right border of the screen. Desktop users currently have to mouse to the top or bottom corners of the screen to access the bar.

Windows 9 may still be far off but what we can see is that Microsoft is thinking hard about how to make the operating system more desktop friendly.
