The Apple world never ceases to amaze us, and the latest rumors are no exception. According to Mark Gurman, it seems that we’ll have to wait a bit longer than expected to see the new M3 chip in the Mac mini and MacBook Pro models. This wait leaves us with more questions than answers.

Each Mac in its own time

In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman revealed yesterday that, although it is “almost certain that we will see an M3 version of the Mac mini,” it won’t be in the near future. Sources indicate that the machine won’t see the light until late 2024 at the earliest, so it won’t be among the first Macs with the M3 chip to hit the market.

Likewise, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will not be part of the first wave of Mac computers with the M3 chip, which is expected to be unveiled by Apple in October of this year. These machines, expected to come with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, will likely be launched around mid-2024.

As of now, the only computer that seems ready for an October release—considering the possibility of iPhone 15 launch delays—is the MacBook Air. Although this computer recently received the M2 chip, it could soon make the leap to the next generation. However, having just one computer—or two if we include the 24-inch iMac—to present in a specific event in October seems like a limited lineup for new releases.

Regarding the Mac mini, Gurman reminds us that the Mac mini with M2 was released over two years after the M1 version, indicating that Apple does not see the Mac mini as a device requiring annual updates. While the transition from M1 to M2, with the Mac mini being the first to switch to Apple silicon, may have altered the usual release schedule, it seems that history will repeat itself. Meanwhile, after the M3’s launch, the M3 Pro and M3 Max variants needed for the MacBook Pro will arrive sometime later.

As we eagerly await the iPhone 15, the release of iOS 17, and other autumn surprises, we’ll be closely watching the Mac lineup’s development. One thing is certain: all eyes are on the M3 chip, and it’s safe to say that we might be in for more than one surprise.
