Say goodbye to Uwe Boll: this video game will have a new movie adaptation… which, hopefully, will be good

The film industry is about to experience a new adaptation of a classic arcade game, specifically the famous rail shooter The House of the Dead, released by Sega in 1997. This title, which has gained popularity over the years thanks to its spin-offs and variants, is getting ready to make the leap to the big screen in a production that has surprised many, considering the history of video game adaptations.

Say goodbye to Uwe Boll

Isabela Merced, recognized for her roles in works such as The Last of Us, Alien: Romulus, and Superman, will star in the movie. Her experience in horror and action-related projects makes her a fitting choice to portray a character who will face hordes of zombies. Merced has been establishing her place in Hollywood, and this new challenge could be a significant opportunity to showcase her versatility.

The direction will be handled by Paul W.S. Anderson, known for his work on the successful Resident Evil saga. Although some of his works have received mixed reviews, many hope that his approach to adapting The House of the Dead will manage to capture the essence of the original arcade, something that the 2003 adaptation, directed by Uwe Boll, failed to achieve. Anderson, whose experience with the horror genre and video games is extensive, could offer a fresh and exciting vision that respects the fans of the source material.

This project comes at a time when Hollywood is reinforcing its interest in video game adaptations, with the increasingly anticipated series of God of War and a new Baldur’s Gate series already in the works. With this landscape, The House of the Dead could open the door to a revival of the genre in cinema, leaving behind the shadows of previous adaptations and offering fans a renewed and exciting approach.
