Scarlett Johansson has been, for many years, the only female reference in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Widow has been the only heroine of the original Avengers cast, and the Lost in Translation actress has had to carry that weight for a long time.
Now, Johansson says she has nothing to do with the Marvel Universe anymore, and after a bumpy exit from the Disney franchise – she left after Black Widow, which was released at the worst possible time for COVID-19, and ended up suing the company for non-payment of royalties – she has spoken at length about her role in the saga.
Farewell to Scarlett Johansson in the UCM
In a chat with The Goop Podcast, a show hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow, the actress talked about how important it was for her to have Paltrow join her on the studio’s early films. First, Paltrow has told her that she was thrilled to see her on the set of Iron Man 2, where she was finally with another girl in a major role.
“We were so excited that you were there and I was so happy to have another woman around“, Paltrow explains. And Johansson was quick to understand when she talked about her experience on The Avengers, where she experienced something similar:
“A little later, I experienced that too. When I did The Avengers I was also one of the few. It was like a big sausage party.”
The Match Point actress also used her appearance on the podcast to make it clear that her involvement in the UCM is over for good. Although there was a rumored secret project in which she was involved, it seems that she has left the baton to Florence Pugh’s character, and that she will not be donning the Black Widow costume again:
“I’m done. The story is over, I’ve done everything I had to do. Coming back and playing a character over and over again, over a decade, has been a unique experience. […] Doing The Avengers has been a lot of fun. I was 26 when I started. I was single, it’s been fun. For me it’s been like being in a kind of summer camp for adults. It’s been fun to be part of something that appeals deeply to the audience.”
