Secret Invasion is the upcoming major Marvel series for Disney Plus, and the first one of Phase 5 after the flood of television shows we received during the previous phase. This time, the story to be told is that of Nick Fury and his relationship with the Skrulls, something we already saw in Captain Marvel but comes back stronger than ever with a new major threat: Gravik.

Also known as the Super-Skrull, this character will challenge the Earth of the Marvel Universe and serve as a precursor to everything we will see in Avengers: Secret Wars. But for now, we have a series full of espionage, adventure, and action directed by Ali Selim, well-known in American television.

Ali Selim has been interviewed by Screen Rant and has shared some of the most important key points we need to keep in mind when watching the series. Here are his statements:

1. Secret Invasion has nothing to do with the comics

“The first thing they told me was not to read the comics. It has nothing to do with what we’re trying to do here. This story really originated from the chemistry between Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, or Nick Fury and Talos, in Captain Marvel. Essentially, they said, ‘oh, we have to do something with this.’ So they found a story that would serve to explore that relationship and expand the MCU with other characters who are not in the comics.”

2. We will meet the real Nick Fury

“It’s exciting to peel back the layers of someone and get to know the most authentic version of that person. Initially, the audience connects with sensations, thrills, and revelations, but they truly connect deeply with the truth and emotion. I think that’s what we’ve found; we’ve been peeling back layers to get to the truth of Nick Fury, something we’ve never seen in the MCU before.”

3. It is a much more human story than other Marvel stories

“What interested me the most about the series is that it’s more grounded to Earth than most of Marvel. Nobody can fly. It’s not about superheroes swooping in at the last minute to save the day. It’s human ingenuity, human persuasion, human honesty, human betrayal… that drives this story.”

4. It is a spy series with references to westerns

“Something that really excited me was the aging of Nick Fury, as well as the themes of trust, suspicion, and identities. All of that led me to film noir. With the creative team, we talked a lot about ‘The Third Man’ and Coppola’s ‘The Conversation,’ great pieces about suspicion and paranoia. Additionally, Nick evolves in this series to become a lone gunslinger in the Wild West, so we also discussed John Ford’s ‘The Searchers’ and Clint Eastwood’s ‘Unforgiven’.”
