“This is a war I have to fight… alone.” The last person we would expect to say this phrase is Nick Fury, the creator of the Avengers and the first Marvel hero who firmly believes in strength in numbers. However, it is the phrase that crowns the new trailer of Secret Invasion, making it clear that the intentions of the Disney Plus series are profound: it is one of the most significant battles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Samuel L. Jackson leads this new series for Disney+ where we will witness the adaptation of one of Marvel’s most popular comic storylines. Moreover, it will serve as a foundation for the upcoming major event of the studio, following Kang’s Dynasty: Avengers: Secret Wars. However, there is still much time until the release of the movie in 2026, so for now, we will focus on the series that will soon land on the platform.

What is Secret Invasion about?

Secret Invasion is a series directed by Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim that focuses on the character of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in a highly personal battle that could determine the future of Earth. In Captain Marvel, we saw his past and how he facilitated the entry of the Skrulls onto our planet. And in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, we saw that there was much more to it as Fury himself is revealed to be a Skrull.

This raised a clear question: Is Nick Fury a Skrull? Are there more versions of this character? What role does the creator of the Avengers play in this “secret invasion”? All of this will be resolved in the series Secret Invasion. After showcasing how this alien species has infiltrated humans since the ’90s, it will explore how Fury and his allies—G’iah, played by Emilia Clarke, Maria Hill, and War Machine—confront a faction of Skrulls who seek to invade the planet.

The official synopsis of the series provides some additional special details that shed light on Nick Fury’s current situation and how these events will relate to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

Secret Invasion follows the story of Nick Fury and Talos, last seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Talos had replicated Fury’s image to impersonate him. Together, they will investigate a sect of Skrulls that have infiltrated the highest levels of authority in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, eliminating them and restoring order.

The series adapts the original 2008 comic written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu. While it will take a fairly loose adaptation, as the comic features the Illuminati we saw in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and many other characters not yet in the MCU, it will still capture the essence of the story. Moreover, it aims to serve as the perfect prelude to the upcoming Secret Wars event in the movies.

Who is the cast of Secret Invasion?

In Secret Invasion, Marvel has assembled an impressive cast of some of the most interesting actors of the moment. Returning characters mix with new additions from the MCU, such as Emilia Clarke, known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. The main cast includes:

  • Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
  • Ben Mendelson as Talos
  • Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
  • Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross
  • Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth
  • Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik
  • Emilia Clarke as G’iah
  • Don Cheadle as James Rhodes / War Machine
  • Killian Scott as Fiz
  • Christopher McDonald has a yet-to-be-revealed role.

When is Secret Invasion released?

The series Secret Invasion will premiere exclusively on Disney Plus on June 21, 2023. It is one of the new series that Marvel Studios will release this year, alongside Echo and the second season of Loki. After the disappointment of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel wants to raise the bar in terms of quality, so we may be looking at a significant increase in level compared to their recent television productions.
