Apple announced today that it will be bringing iOS to the car with CarPlay. A video released from Volvo shows us a first glimpse of how Apple’s mobile operating system will work inside a car.

In the video below, we see a CarPlay’s slick interface which places iPhone app icons on the navigation screen. There’s shortcuts for messages, calling, maps, music, iTunes Radio, and Spotify. We also see the British version of Siri dictate a message. There’s also the iconic Apple home button we’re all familiar with.

CarPlay also features controls for changing things like temperature and turning on the seat heaters. Change the temperature by tapping on the number and sliding your finger to the desired number. This looks slick but could prove problematic in motion.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft are all competing to get their operating systems into cars. Microsoft has had their SYNC system in Fords since 2008 but it has failed to attract other car manufacturers. Google plans to bring Android into the car with the Open Automotive Alliance but has yet to show it working.

For any of these companies to be truly successful, the operating system needs to be easy to use, easily upgradable, and must work with as many cars and phones as possible. While it’s easy to switch your phone out every other year, switching out your car or your car’s operating system will not be as simple.
