Konami is shaking things up for Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, using a new game engine based on their ‘Fox’ engine. That engine is being used for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, so we can already see it in action.

Using an adapted version of this game engine will clearly make Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 an incredible looking game. EA’s FIFA series has been pretty much untouchable for a few seasons now, but nothing lasts forever. Could this be the year PES retakes the soccer crown?

Here’s the trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, using the Fox Engine. As you’ll see, we can at least predict the rain will look great in PES 2014!

PES team leader Jon Murphy is in Japan now, to see the new engine, so we expect some more updates from him soon. He has already teased on Twitter that the new engine ‘is going to spring some surprises!’

While this engine looks great, there’s more to soccer than graphics. However well Leo Messi’s face is rendered won’t matter if the gameplay’s not right. FIFA also maintains its licensing advantage.
