Sicario 3 is finally moving forward: Taylor Sheridan returns to write

NBCUniversal is moving ahead with Sicario 3, and Taylor Sheridan is back to write it. News of the sequel came out through reporting on Sheridan’s new deal with the studio, which finally puts some weight behind a project that has spent years stuck in rumors, delays, and development limbo.

Trade reports have been referring to the film as Sicario: Capos, though that could still change. Either way, if you’ve been waiting since 2018’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado, this is the first update that feels like actual movement. Anyone who’s followed this series for a while should probably keep an eye on it.

Josh Brolin has already said it “is happening” and should start soon, so Matt Graver looks set to return. Benicio del Toro also seems likely to come back, since Alejandro made it through the last film. Emily Blunt is still the big question mark.

Denis Villeneuve probably won’t be directing this one. He’s tied up with Dune: Part Three and the next James Bond movie, and reports say he wasn’t approached anyway. That changes the picture quite a bit. Villeneuve and Roger Deakins were a big part of what made the 2015 original so acclaimed, while Sicario: Day of the Soldado got a much more divided response and brought in a weaker box office, even with Sheridan writing. And hanging over all of it are today’s border politics, plus the usual risks that come with picking up a franchise after such a long gap.

At this point, Sicario 3 looks like a real NBCUniversal project, with production expected to start soon.
