The HomePod and HomePod mini, in the latest available versions of their operating system, include a sound recognition feature that allows them to detect the sound of a smoke alarm in case it is sounding. A feature, announced last January, that is already available.

Once the recognition in question has been configured, the system is able to recognize both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, sending notifications to the iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch of registered users in the home. While it is true that when we are at home these types of alarms can be heard clearly, this function is especially useful when we are not at home.

Some alarms, especially those already integrated with HomeKit, already offer this automatic notification, but for the others, this HomePod feature allows us to receive immediate alerts in case smoke or carbon monoxide is detected. With a single setting, we turn a traditional alarm into a smart one.

How to activate fire alarm notifications

We assume that we have a HomePod with us, that we have configured it in the Home app and that both our iPhone and the HomePod itself are updated to the latest available version of the respective operating systems. Then the steps to follow are as follows:

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Touch the button in the shape of three dots in the upper right corner.
  3. Choose House settings.
  4. We enter Security.
  5. We tap on Sound Recognition.
  6. We activate smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Let’s notice, in addition, that at the bottom we can activate the HomePods that we want to be part of the detection network. This is an important setting depending on their location, as some of them may be close to sound sources similar to alarms, although they are not.

Setting up fire alarm detection on the HomePod is a very simple process that can be really useful to receive real-time notifications in case of an emergency, even with Do Not Disturb mode enabled. Hopefully it will never be necessary, but with just a few settings in the Home app, we can turn a traditional alarm into a smart one and make the most of Apple’s sound recognition technology to have greater peace of mind and security in our home.
