Snapchat has announced two new features for its messaging app. As well as photos, you can now text chat and make video calls.

These additions aren’t about making Snapchat more comparable with other free messaging services: both have a distinctly Snapchat feel to them. With chat, you swipe right on any friend’s name to start. When you leave a chat, messages will be deleted, but you can tap any message to save it.

This means you get to keep the important stuff like addresses or instructions, but the general conversation isn’t saved. Anyone who’s scrolled back through lots of WhatsApp messages looking for that one important piece of information can understand how neat Snapchat’s take on chat could be.

With video calls, if both of you are online in a chat, you can tap and hold to activate video. It stops when you lift your finger, and you can switch between front and rear cameras by sliding up and down the screen. Like chat, it’s an innovative take on video calls that’s really simple.
