Sony announces what we all feared: Concord has died

Many of us were concerned about Firewalk Studios’ situation due to their recently released hero shooter, Concord. The game, which generated excitement during its summer presentation, had not managed to have a successful debut. Its peak number of players on Steam was about 600 people—very low for a PlayStation release.

One and a half weeks after its release, Sony announced that it would disconnect Concord, its latest game for PlayStation, on September 6 due to its low sales.

The first-person shooter was released exclusively for PS5 and PC on August 23, but estimates place sales below 25,000 units. Concord also managed to reach a “historic” peak of 697 players on Steam, below the launch peak of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, widely considered the worst game of 2023.

“We have decided to close the game starting from September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that better reach our players,” says Concord’s director, Ryan Ellis, in a post on the PlayStation blog.

“While we determine the best course of action, Concord’s sales will be halted immediately, and we will begin offering a full refund to all players who have purchased the game for PS5 or PC,” which is something that honors the studio and Sony.

If you purchased the game for PS5 on the PlayStation Store, a refund will be issued to your original payment method. If you bought Concord on Steam, you will receive a refund in the next few days, and the same will happen on the Epic Games Store.

Concord was released as a $40 game after eight years of development. In the competitive hero shooter genre, it faced many free alternatives to play, like Overwatch and even Valorant. Ultimately, it has been unable to compete as a paid game, especially without a unique selling point.

Firewalk Studios mentions options “that will better reach our players,” and refunds suggest that Concord, if it returns, will transition to a free-to-play model. “We will keep you informed, and thanks again to all the Freegunners who have joined us in the Concord galaxy,” says Ellis.
