Spotify unveils AI Persona badge: synthetic artists lose recommendations

Spotify is adding a new “AI Persona” badge to artist profiles that aren’t connected to a real human identity. Starting in mid-September, fully machine-generated acts will carry a clearer public label, Spotify says.

Profiles with the AI Persona badge also won’t show up in Spotify’s default personalized recommendations. That means they won’t get pushed into autoplay, mixes, or discovery features, though listeners can still search for them and play them directly. Spotify says the goal is to make invented names, photos, and branding easier to spot at a glance.

Artists will be able to disclose that status through Spotify for Artists. Spotify says it will also rely on human reviewers and investigative detection tools, then notify the artist or rights holder and give them a chance to appeal. The policy is aimed at the public-facing persona, not every use of software during production, and track-level tools such as AI Credits and SongDNA will remain separate.

For anyone who cares about recommendation quality and transparency, this matters. Streaming services are dealing with a flood of machine-made uploads, and rival platforms are reportedly seeing tens of thousands of tracks a day.

You’ll start seeing the AI Persona badge on Spotify artist pages, in search results, and in playlists in mid-September, according to Spotify.
