‘Star Wars’ and Marvel will share a universe in a comic collection that verges on the absurd

More than 20 years ago now, a primordial Internet celebrated the arrival of The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, an impossible crossover where all kinds of characters in the history of pop culture, from Darth Vader to the Power Rangers including Chuck Norris, fought each other in a bloody battle where there could be only one. At the time it was as ridiculous as it was fun. Now, sadly, reality is only ridiculous.

Good guys, bad guys and explosions

Disney, in its eagerness to make as many crossovers as possible to exploit all its brands to the fullest, has decided that this is the perfect moment to take Star Wars and introduce it into the Marvel Universe. The five-issue series, called Hope Assembles, tells what would have happened if A New Hope had taken place on our heroes’ Earth. The excuse? An interdimensional, inter-reality spell. Well of course, same as always.

At the helm will be, of course, Kevin Smith, the film director and comics fan who will bring together Captain America, Hulk and Spider-Man with Luke Skywalker, and Darth Vader with Thanos, Ultron and Doctor Doom. “In the early 80s I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. And although it was fun following the adventures of Luke, Leia and Han, I always wished Spider-Man or Doctor Doom would show up in a crossover. So when the chance came to tell that story, nobody had to twist my arm!”.

As critical as I am of the project, I don’t want to mislead anyone either: it’s going to make an absolute fortune, but it’s still disappointing that this is what Marvel’s new boss, Stephen Wacker, wants to leave as his legacy. There is the possibility, of course, that it will be incredible. You never know, stranger things have happened… And, after all, the Force is with them, right?
