Star Wars returns to cinemas in 2027: the original cut is back

Lucasfilm has put the original Star Wars back on the big screen starting February 19, 2027. The re-release is part of the franchise’s 50th anniversary plans, and it brings back the 1977 theatrical cut.

If your version of Star Wars begins with the 1997 Special Edition and everything that came after it, this limited run is kind of a big deal. Starting February 19, 2027, it gives audiences their first major chance in about 30 years to see the original theatrical version as it played back then, without the digital tweaks, extra scenes, updated creature effects, and all the altered sound and visual changes added later.

For longtime fans, or anyone who cares about film preservation, this anniversary screening feels like one to catch. A lot of fans and preservation advocates have wanted this for years, and many of them see it as a long-overdue course correction from Disney and Lucasfilm.

Some pieces are still up in the air. It’s not clear yet whether the theatrical run will go beyond the US, how exactly the restoration was done, or how directly George Lucas was involved.
