Star Wars: The High Republic introduces a new Darth Vader-level threat

Recent Star Wars stories have been making a pretty clear point: Star Wars villains don’t need the Sith to feel dangerous. Star Wars: The High Republic proves it by putting the Nihil, Marchion Ro, and the Drengir front and center.

For decades, the obvious blueprint was Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and whoever came after them. They set the standard for fear, power, and conflict on a galactic scale. The newer stories have opened that up.

Set centuries before the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The High Republic steps away from the familiar Sith-versus-Jedi setup and goes after something else. Lucasfilm Publishing’s Michael Siglain put it simply: “What scares the Jedi?” Charles Soule and Cavan Scott answered that by creating threats the Jedi don’t really know how to handle.

The clearest example is the Nihil, marauders from the Outer Rim who turn disorder into a weapon. They use chemical weapons, poison, and secret hyperspace Paths that let them hit without warning.

Marchion Ro gives that chaos a face, and he does it through legacy, patience, manipulation, and straight-up cruelty. Then there are the Drengir, sentient dark-side plant predators that push Star Wars into outright horror.
