Steam has reached a significant milestone with 42 million concurrent users at peak, reflecting a steady growth of approximately 3.4 million new users per year since it surpassed the 25 million barrier.
This ongoing expansion highlights the popularity of Valve’s platform, establishing itself as one of the most used in digital video game distribution.
Steam moves an absurd amount of information
In 2024, Steam processed around 80 exabytes of data, with a projected growth to 100 exabytes in 2025. This astonishing figure translates to an average of 274 petabytes of downloads daily, equivalent to more than 11 petabytes per hour. These numbers provide an impressive perspective on the magnitude of the data traffic that Steam handles and the growing demand for games and updates from its users.
In addition, Valve has improved its revenue share for developers, reaching a 76% distribution in 2025 thanks to new policies implemented since 2018. This approach not only benefits developers but also ensures that Steam remains an attractive option for the creation and distribution of video games, which could be driving its continued expansion in the market.
On the other hand, Valve’s financial success is manifested in the recent spending of CEO Gabe Newell, who acquired a $500 million yacht with deep luxury, which includes a garage for submarines and 15 gaming computers. This ostentation underscores not only the economic performance of the company but also its influential position within the digital entertainment industry.
With sustained growth and dazzling figures, the future of Steam looks bright, and experts suggest that its impact on the video game industry will continue to increase as it keeps innovating and expanding its offerings.
