Steam releases surge: generated-content games flood the store

Between July 2023 and July 2026, Valve’s PC storefront Steam got most of its release growth from games carrying the platform’s disclosure tag for generated content, according to an analysis of 53,597 releases.

Looking at those 53,597 Steam games released from July 2023 to July 2026, the analysis found that titles with Valve’s generated-content disclosure label accounted for 60% to 90% of monthly growth, adding roughly 530 releases a month. Games without that disclosure still rose, but much more slowly, from about 1,030 to 1,320. Since Valve changed the policy in January 2026, developers have only had to disclose player-facing uses, including assets, in-game material, and marketing, rather than internal workflow tools.

On the money side, those disclosure-tagged games had brought in about $660 million by November 2025, based on the same analysis, though most made less than $10,000 and only 45 passed $1 million. The top 1% of all games pull in about 94% of the revenue, and a separate Game Oracle study covering nearly 10,000 releases from 2025 found that disclosure-tagged titles received 53% fewer first-month reviews and lower median scores.
