Steam’s July 2026 survey: 16GB GPUs and 8-core CPUs go mainstream

Steam’s July 2026 Hardware Survey points to a change in everyday PC gaming hardware. Across all Steam users, 8-core CPUs have now inched past 6-core processors, 27.85% to 27.52%. GPUs with 16GB of VRAM have also moved just ahead of 8GB cards, 25.9% versus 25.32%, according to Steam’s Hardware Survey data. It’s a small lead. Still, after years of 6-core CPUs and 8GB GPUs sitting in the mainstream sweet spot, newer games are starting to push ordinary systems a step higher.

The reasons aren’t hard to see. AMD’s X3D chips have likely pulled more buyers toward 8-core gaming builds, and the demands on the graphics side keep stacking up: higher resolutions, ray tracing, bigger worlds, better textures, heavier effects. That’s where 8GB starts to feel tight. Steam’s Windows-only data still shows a slight lead for 6-core CPUs and 8GB VRAM, though, and more than half of users are still on 12GB or less, according to Steam’s survey.
