Stone Kite Studios launches with Jason Jones’ new sci-fi comic

Stone Kite Studios launched today, bringing Bungie co-founder Jason Jones into a new project with bestselling author Margaret Stohl. The company isn’t starting as a standard game developer. It’s opening as a transmedia studio, with plans to build original universes across comics, books, film, television, and maybe games too. Its first release is One Zero One, a four-part digital comic based on a Jason Jones manuscript about humans fighting autonomous robotic soldiers.

Stohl is the CEO. Her résumé runs through novels, Marvel Comics, games, and the narrative team behind Destiny 2. Stone Kite says creators from comics, prose, screen, and interactive media will be shaping the same world from the beginning. The studio is also reportedly backed by Griffin Gaming Partners.

If you follow Halo, Destiny, or Bungie, this is one to keep an eye on. The timing gives it extra weight, since the announcement arrives after layoffs and restructuring at Bungie that reportedly affected Jason Jones. Transmedia universe-building is still a hard sell, sure, but that context makes the move feel bigger.

You can get One Zero One as a digital comic series as part of Stone Kite Studios’ launch.
