Super Mario Galaxy has reached the top of the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year with a total of $747.4 million raised to date. This sequel to Nintendo’s successful film has surpassed Pegasus 3, a racing movie that had previously dominated the market, with earnings of $641 million.

The film, directed by Han Han, made a significant impact after its IMAX release in North America, but has not been able to hold its ground against the formidable advance of the Mario franchise.

Mario has no rival, except himself

The projection for Super Mario Galaxy is high, as it positions itself as the most promising production of 2026, generating expectations of being the first to cross the symbolic barrier of 1 billion dollars.

This milestone is particularly significant in a year of intense competition in the film industry, where other productions like Project Salvation, an adaptation of a novel by Andy Weir starring Ryan Gosling, rank third with 573 million dollars in global revenue.

In the Spanish market, Super Mario Galaxy has maintained its leading position since its release, according to Comscore data.

However, the competition has begun to intensify, with The Mummy, a horror film directed by Lee Cronin and released on April 17, now occupying the second spot. Project Salvation holds steady in third place, while The Benetton Family +2, a comedy sequel, has debuted in fourth position.

Meanwhile, Torrente Presidente, which had taken the title of the highest-grossing Spanish film of the year with a revenue of 26.3 million euros, has dropped to fifth place on the weekend box office chart.
