Supermassive Games is back with a horror game set in the final frontier: space

Supermassive Games, known for its success in the interactive horror genre with titles like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has confirmed the release of its new game, Directive 8020, scheduled for May 12, 2026. This science fiction title promises to immerse players in a disturbing survival context, where humanity must face an existential crisis on Earth, which is on the brink of ruin.

In space, a certain number of people will be able to hear your screams

In Directive 8020, players will find themselves 12 light-years from home, on the planet Tau Ceti, after the accident of the colonial ship Cassiopeia. The game, which focuses on difficult decisions and moral dilemmas, aims to maintain the precise essence of its narrative, where players must negotiate loyalties to ensure the survival of their characters.

One of the most notable additions in this release is the participation of actress Lashana Lynch, known for her work in Bob Marley: One Love and The Woman King, who will play one of the main characters. Her inclusion could attract a broader player base, generating higher expectations around the game.

Despite these promises, Supermassive Games faces considerable pressure. Following the less-than-successful launch of Little Nightmares 3 —which only received a 46% positive rating on Steam— the company suffered layoffs of 36 workers and a delay in the release of Directive 8020. Developers must ensure that this new title restores the company’s reputation, especially after the negative reception of their previous project.

This scenario presents a tense outlook for Supermassive Games, which is now looking to turn Directive 8020 into a resounding success in 2026, thereby regaining the trust of fans and critics in the industry.
