WordPress logoWordPress has released the first beta download of the upcoming 2.3 version and it’s packing some pretty important new features. The key addition for users will be the new support for tags which can now be added to posts as well as categories.

For a long time, if users wanted a decent category structure as well as a more modern and specific tagging system, they had to go to third parties like Neato who produce the highly popular Ultimate Tag Warrior (aka UTW). Now, WordPress has in-built support for tags meaning that the plugin developers can focus more on customisation and advanced features, relying on the fact that there’s a stable, supported system behind them. Users of UTW can automatically import their tags in WordPress 2.3.

Managers of multi-author blogs (like insideTonic) are given some more control of workflow via the new ‘Pending Review’ post status setting, while single users and admins alike will benefit from an improved update notification service for WP and installed plugins.

There have also been some pretty serious changes made under the hood – in part because of the new availability of tags. As well as this, new SEO friendly URLs (particularly via the updated Canonical URL redirection system).

For the full list of new and updated features, see the WordPress development site. The final version of 2.3 is expected on September 24th.
