Task Season 2 may not arrive until 2027: HBO says don’t expect it before May

HBO CEO Casey Bloys is now putting Task Season 2 no earlier than May 2027, with June 2027 looking like the first truly plausible window. A 2026 premiere is basically off the table. Season 2 of the crime drama began filming in Pennsylvania in June 2026 and was reportedly halfway finished by mid-September, but the long post-production timeline is pretty standard for an HBO drama built on this scale.

HBO renewed Task, a seven-episode crime drama, in November 2025 after its fall 2025 debut. The series comes from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby and stars Mark Ruffalo as FBI agent Tom Brandis. Season 1 pulled a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and ended up as one of HBO’s five biggest series debuts.

Ruffalo, Martha Plimpton, and Silvia Dionicio are all back. Joining them are Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, and Edgar Ramírez. This time, FBI agent Tom Brandis is heading up a new task force tied to a murkier case. Julianne Nicholson also crosses over from Mare of Easttown as Lori Ross.

So if you were hoping the show would turn around quickly, that’s not happening. Still, Task is coming back. Just not anytime soon. When Season 2 finally lands, you’ll be able to watch it on HBO and Max.
