It may sound like a big clickbait in the headline, but it is not at all. The headline comes from a statement by Katsuhiro Hara, director of Tekken 8, made to Play Magazine during the test of the game to which the press has had access. In short, the fighting title’s boss believes that his next creation should be like Dark Souls, but within fighting games.
Harada believes that fighting games are complex and complicated, hence Tekken 8 feels like an evolution of the series in that sense. To this end, he gave the example of the Souls saga, games that he says are deliberately difficult, but which players enjoy playing. In this sense, users have no choice but to level up and improve their game. Well, this is what Harada is looking for with Tekken 8, in a nutshell.
The director wants the players to feel that they are progressing at all times, that they are advancing and having fun in equal parts, but also that this path is not exactly easy. If you want to improve, you have to suffer. As in Souls, of course (it doesn’t fool anyone).
Now, proposing a challenge like Souls in a fighting video game is also, to some extent, putting up barriers. The balance for new players to enter this installment is necessary, although Harada’s statements make more sense from the point of view of progression.
Tekken 8 remains without an assigned release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox X | S Series and PC. Mind you, it smells like it’s not far off.
