Terminator 2 is back in theaters: 35th anniversary brings 4K and 3D

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is back in theaters this month for its 35th anniversary. This time it’s a 4K and 3D re-release, not a new Terminator sequel, and for the moment it’s about as close as the franchise has to an official event.

The theatrical run is expected to stretch from late August into early September across North America, Europe, Latin America, and Australia. Most of the promotion has been easiest to spot in North American and European markets, while reporting has been thinner so far in parts of Asia and Africa.

If you still keep up with this series, this one’s easy to recommend. T2 is doing the heavy lifting for the brand again, and the strong response from fans and critics keeps coming back to the same things: the effects that felt groundbreaking then and still hold up, the movie’s influence on action cinema, and the Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Robert Patrick showdown that, for a lot of viewers, still defines Terminator.

That return hits a little harder right now. Netflix canceled Terminator Zero in early 2026 after one season, Terminator: Survivors has been delayed indefinitely beyond 2026, and James Cameron is only reportedly working on a new script, with very few concrete details out there and any release likely still years away.

So if you want to catch Terminator 2: Judgment Day in theaters this month, you can. For now, that may be the closest thing to an official franchise event.
