Here is the Mad Max cameo you didn’t see in Furiosa

The release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has expanded George Miller’s universe after Fury Road, but it hasn’t just served to explain more about the character played by Anya Taylor-Joy. It also has a hidden surprise for fans: the presence of Mad Max.

While the movie focuses on the story of Furiosa a brief cameo of the Road Warrior has sparked the curiosity of viewers. The figure of Max, played by stunt double Jacob Tomuri, is seen standing next to his Ford Falcon V8 Interceptor, as he watches Furiosa fight to survive in the unforgiving wasteland.

A future for Max in the franchise?

The briefness of the scene has led to numerous potential interpretations of its meaning. Why is Max there? What role does he play in the Furiosa story? The director of the saga, George Miller, has revealed that the events of Furiosa was developed 15 years before Mad Max: Fury Road. And he explains that “Max is lurking somewhere in this story”; which suggests that the character’s presence in the prequel is not accidental.

The inclusion of Max in Furiosa opens the door to the possibility of the character having a more important role in the fifth installment of the saga, the only one in which he isn’t the lead role. Miller has expressed his interest in exploring what happened to Max during the year prior to the events of Fury Road, so that could be the direction they take. However, Furiosa’s poor box-office performance changes everything… and it’s possible that in the end there is no future for Mad Max.
