Amid the COVID-19 crisis, instead of going on that romantic summer vacation you had planned with your sweetie, you are probably spending some long days stuck at home. What’s more, if movie theaters are closed in your area, a fun date night watching a movie on the big screen with some popcorn is out of the question. Fortunately, you still have Netflix, a digital platform where you can find thousands of series and movies to enjoy and help you forget about the hard situation that’s afflicting the planet, if only for a little while.
While Netflix is fantastic for spending hours watching movies or series with your significant other, you might have a hard time finding something to watch due to the sheer size of its catalog. Are you sick of searching and searching while your honey nods off beside you? Don’t worry! In today’s article, we’re going to share our roundup of the best date night movies on Netflix. We hope you like them!
Ghost is one of those romantic movies that never goes out of style. Is there anything more beautiful than a love so strong that it transcends death? It tells the story of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and Molly Jensen (Demi Moore), a couple who is living happily in New York City until one day, they cross paths with a crook named Willy López. After a struggle, López shoots and kills Sam, but his ghost is unable to cross over to the “other side.” From that moment, Sam will protect Molly and communicate with her through a medium (Whoopi Goldberg). This classic film will have you sighing when you hear its “Unchained Melody.”
From a ’90s classic, we’ll jump to one from the ’80s… also starring Patrick Swayze! Dirty Dancing takes us back to the 1960s, telling the beautiful and brave love story between a seductive dance instructor (Swayze) and a 17-year old ingénue (Jennifer Grey). They’ll meet one summer at a holiday resort, and although social differences will prevent them from consummating their love, music and especially dance will unite them in a way that makes them inseparable. The classic scene with the famous lift to the tune of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” is unforgettable.
Silver Linings Playbook
Silver Linings Playbook is the perfect romantic comedy-drama to watch with your partner. Pat (Bradley Cooper) is a young man who, after spending several months in a psychiatric hospital for attacking his (now ex-) wife’s lover, moves back in with his parents. Pat is determined to win back his lost love, but gradually, his feelings change after he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a troubled and emotionally unstable girl. Although they don’t exactly connect at first, they slowly develop a beautiful friendship based on dance and finding inner peace by seeking silver linings. Will it lead to romance?
After those romantic comedies, why not watch a tearjerker? Love Story is a romantic movie that left its mark on film history, and even people who haven’t seen it will recognize the famous line “love means never having to say you’re sorry.” It follows Oliver Barret IV (Ryan O’Neal), a young man from an upper-class family who falls head-over-heels in love with Jenny Cavalleri, a student. They marry against the wishes of Oliver’s family, getting by on little money and only the strength of their love. Unfortunately, there are forces in life that not even love can conquer. Make sure to get your Kleenex ready!
Our Souls at Night
Our Souls at Night is a sweet movie that proves that love is ageless. You’ll meet Addie Moore (Jane Fonda), a widow who lost her husband years ago. All alone, with her children living far away from Colorado, Addie feels like she has lost a big part of her life and tries desperately to repair her relationship with them. However, her loneliness will end when she receives a surprise visit from Louis Waters (Robert Redford), who has been her neighbor for decades but whom she hardly knows. Is your sweetie always looking at their phone, to the point where you suspect they might be keeping secrets from you? Seize the opportunity this summer and get them to watch Perfect Strangers with you! This Álex de la Iglesia film is a fun-filled, ticking time bomb that starts with some friends having a simple, laid-back dinner party. The problem begins when, as a seemingly innocent party game, all the guests have to put their phones on the table and read aloud the texts they receive. Surprising and fun with lots of plot twists, Perfect Strangers is a film that you can’t miss. That said, if your honey breaks into a sweat and tries to hide his or her phone while watching it, you might have a reason to suspect something.
In 2014, Spanish Affair was a real boost for Spanish comedy. It shattered box office records and was one of the most watched and acclaimed movies of the year. In it, we meet Amaia (Clara Lago), a young Basque woman who moves to Seville to forget about her fiance after breaking up with him. There, she meets Rafa (Dani Rovira), a stand-up comedian who uses all kinds of stereotypes about Basque people to get laughs. Obviously this doesn’t sit well with Amaia, and after several clashes and angry encounters with Rafa, they end up feeling strongly attracted to one another. However, when Amaia decides to go home to the Basque Country without telling Rafa, the young man follows her there and attempts to impersonate a full-blooded Basque to win her father’s approval. That said, the only thing Rafa knows about the region are stereotypes, so lots of comedy ensues.
Spanish Affair 2
If you liked Spanish Affair, don’t miss the sequel, Spanish Affair 2. In it, Dani Rovira and Clara Lago are back, but this time, Amaia has traded Rafa for Pau (Berto Romero), a young Catalonian man she is going to marry. Obviously her father (Karra Elejalde) isn’t pleased about this, and he goes to Seville to find the stand-up comedian. Regretting his decision to break up with Amaia, Rafa travels to Catalonia to stop Amaia and Pau’s wedding. More laughter and stereotypes ensue, but this time, the focus is on Catalonians instead of Basques.
If you had to name the ultimate romantic movie of modern cinema, The Notebook is probably the first film that would come to mind. This beautiful film, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, uses flashbacks to tell the love story of Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams). It deals with many topics, such as the classist society of the ’40s, the arrival of the war, how love conquers all, and the terrible effects of Alzheimer’s on the minds of our loved ones. If you haven’t seen it yet, take it from us: you’ll need lots of tissues! Get ready to cry… a lot.
To finish our roundup of date night movies, our final pick is Dear John, a sweet romantic movie that shows that distance doesn’t matter in love. The film follows John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a young soldier who goes home on leave and falls in love with Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried). A passionate love story ensues, but a few weeks later, John has to return to the front and Savannah has to go back to college, so they part ways.
