Ghost

Ghost is one of those romantic movies that never goes out of style. Is there anything more beautiful than a love so strong that it transcends death? It tells the story of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and Molly Jensen (Demi Moore), a couple who is living happily in New York City until one day, they cross paths with a crook named Willy López. After a struggle, López shoots and kills Sam, but his ghost is unable to cross over to the “other side.” From that moment, Sam will protect Molly and communicate with her through a medium (Whoopi Goldberg). This classic film will have you sighing when you hear its “Unchained Melody.”

Dirty Dancing

From a ’90s classic, we’ll jump to one from the ’80s… also starring Patrick Swayze! Dirty Dancing takes us back to the 1960s, telling the beautiful and brave love story between a seductive dance instructor (Swayze) and a 17-year old ingénue (Jennifer Grey). They’ll meet one summer at a holiday resort, and although social differences will prevent them from consummating their love, music and especially dance will unite them in a way that makes them inseparable. The classic scene with the famous lift to the tune of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” is unforgettable.

Spanish Affair

In 2014, Spanish Affair was a real boost for Spanish comedy. It shattered box office records and was one of the most watched and acclaimed movies of the year. In it, we meet Amaia (Clara Lago), a young Basque woman who moves to Seville to forget about her fiance after breaking up with him. There, she meets Rafa (Dani Rovira), a stand-up comedian who uses all kinds of stereotypes about Basque people to get laughs. Obviously this doesn’t sit well with Amaia, and after several clashes and angry encounters with Rafa, they end up feeling strongly attracted to one another. However, when Amaia decides to go home to the Basque Country without telling Rafa, the young man follows her there and attempts to impersonate a full-blooded Basque to win her father’s approval. That said, the only thing Rafa knows about the region are stereotypes, so lots of comedy ensues.

If you liked Spanish Affair, don’t miss the sequel, Spanish Affair 2. In it, Dani Rovira and Clara Lago are back, but this time, Amaia has traded Rafa for Pau (Berto Romero), a young Catalonian man she is going to marry. Obviously her father (Karra Elejalde) isn’t pleased about this, and he goes to Seville to find the stand-up comedian. Regretting his decision to break up with Amaia, Rafa travels to Catalonia to stop Amaia and Pau’s wedding. More laughter and stereotypes ensue, but this time, the focus is on Catalonians instead of Basques.

The Notebook

If you had to name the ultimate romantic movie of modern cinema, The Notebook is probably the first film that would come to mind. This beautiful film, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, uses flashbacks to tell the love story of Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams). It deals with many topics, such as the classist society of the ’40s, the arrival of the war, how love conquers all, and the terrible effects of Alzheimer’s on the minds of our loved ones. If you haven’t seen it yet, take it from us: you’ll need lots of tissues! Get ready to cry… a lot.
