The box office is going to take another turn and continues to disrupt Hollywood. Not thanks to He-man, but to a simple comedy

With each passing month, it becomes clearer and clearer that the old hegemony of big releases turning into major box office hits is, at this point, dead and buried. And it seems that the monumental hit of The Mandalorian and Grogu is just the first of many that we are going to experience in the coming weeks, sidelined by smaller works that, to the surprise of shareholders, have managed to resonate with the audience. In other words: things are changing, and those who do not get on the train will be left behind.

A Box Office of Laughter

As analysts deduce, Scary Movie, the sixth installment of the parody franchise, is set to make a grand return after 13 years on hold. It is estimated that this first weekend will generate 70 million dollars worldwide, of which 40 million will come from the U.S. box office. In other words: with a budget of 30 million, it would yield immediate profits. But for every face, there is a tough, very tough flip side.

And that is the one for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which is estimated to make 30 million in the United States and no more than 50 worldwide, a complete failure considering it cost 200 million. Ugh. Really, is there an audience for a nostalgic-but-modern movie of this franchise? The answer lies in the upcoming supposed reboot of She-Ra. In other words, no way. It’s not going to happen.

And where is the audience going? Well, to see Backrooms and Obsession, in what has been called “the YouTuber attack.” But for YouTubers, those behind the Australian animated series The Amazing Digital Circus, which will premiere its last episode in a limited way and supposedly will take more than anyone had predicted. Hollywood is not dead: finally, after years of waiting, it has evolved.
