Toby Fox, developer of the acclaimed games Undertale and Deltarune, has faced criticism from some Latin American fans due to the absence of official translations in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
In a recent post on Bluesky, Fox clarified that his decision not to offer localizations in other languages is based on his desire for any official version of his games to reflect his personal vision. “I want to make it clear that this is not out of resentment towards other countries, but because if I release something official, I want it to match my vision,” he explained.
No translation that I cannot supervise
Despite his reluctance to make official translations, Fox expressed his satisfaction with the unofficial translations made by the fan community. “I am very happy that there are unofficial translations on PC.
They allow fans to interpret the game without the burden of being officially perfect,” he commented, highlighting his appreciation for the community’s work.
Additionally, erroneous theories have been generated regarding Fox’s perception of Latin America, influenced by the lack of official translations, the omission of the region in an Undertale concert, and the high shipping costs of Fangamer merchandise.
Fox addressed these concerns and emphasized that he has no prejudices against the region, and that in the past he has explored localization options with his publisher, 8-4, although without concrete results so far.
In a positive note for fans, Fox also confirmed that most of the development team for Deltarune Chapter 5 has made progress in their work, suggesting that this new chapter is closer to being released. Undoubtedly, the followers of his work are eagerly awaiting more news about the future of these iconic titles.
