Sam Barlow, creator of games like Immortality and Her Story, has confirmed that his next game will be called Precognition. Until now only known as Project C, he has also confirmed that Kinetic Publishing will handle its publication and that, as we already knew, his studio, Half Mermaid Productions, is working on it, and it’ll also feature a prestigious film director: Brandon Cronenberg. He has directed films such as Antiviral, Possessor or, more recently, Infinity Pool.
A game unlike any other we’re going to see
Presented in January 2024 as Project C, it’s an FMV horror and science fiction game, that is, live-action video you can interact with. With a release date set for spring 2028, it will have versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, so we’ll still have to wait a bit before we can play it. And also see how it’s possible that it was originally started as a possible Metroid project, as he told Rock Paper Shotgun.
Barlow emphasized that “we’ve tried to push the limits of non-linear narrative, focusing on how it feels to play the game, while at the same time encouraging player agency and freedom”. While Cronenberg, who had already played the studio’s previous games, stated that “the games Sam and his team have made over the years are subjective experiences by their very nature, and two people won’t have the same experience with them, so it’s the perfect place to explore these themes further (with horror emerging from one person’s perspective on the world around them)”.
In Precognition we’ll follow the story of Diana, a woman capable of receiving visions of the future after an experimental implant is installed in her brain. She’ll have to explore them to uncover the consequences it has for human consciousness, memory, and the life of anyone who experiences it.
