Honogurashi no Niwa, a new farming simulation game, has been announced for release in the West this fall under the title Village in the Shade.
Originally presented for Japan in July 2025, this title promises to take players to a cozy Japanese village known as Kagatsu, where they will have the opportunity to plant crops, customize their homes, and meet intriguing characters.
A normal town, if you follow the rules
The game trailer highlights a hand-painted environment that captures the essence of a Japanese mountain settlement, evoking a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Players will be able to relax by the stream, admire the beauty of the cherry blossoms with their neighbors, or take a stroll through the village, as described in the game’s promotional material. However, the trailer also reveals a dark twist, suggesting that the tranquility of the place is merely a facade.
At the end of the preview, a character ventures outside into the night and encounters an evil entity, raising questions about what truly lurks in Kagatsu. The press release warns players about the importance of “discovering the truth about Kagatsu at their own risk, or following the rules and avoiding seeing a part of the village they do not wish to.”
This game seems to capture the attention of those who enjoy the intersection between comfort and horror, a combination that has resonated with many players in recent years. Personally, I am drawn to these experiences that mix the pleasant with the unsettling.
This same duality can be found in works like Dredge, which has been acclaimed as one of the best indie games for its ability to offer a wide range of experiences in an aesthetically fascinating environment. Without a doubt, Village in the Shade is a title worth keeping an eye on when it arrives this fall.
