The Crust is free on Steam now: lunar survival with sci-fi dread

The Crust is free to check out on Steam right now, according to the game’s Steam page. What you’re getting is a mix of lunar base building, survival strategy, automation, and a pretty thick layer of sci-fi dread.

VEOM Studio developed it, and Crytivo is publishing. In The Crust, you’re put in charge of a Moon colony meant to help save humanity. That means mining and processing resources, keeping the economy from falling apart, pushing outward to explore, and trying to turn a shaky little outpost into a full industrial operation.

If Factorio or Surviving Mars are your kind of thing, you’ll probably lock onto the production-line side of it fast. The tone is harsher, though, which is why the Fallout and Terminator comparisons don’t feel like a stretch.

The Crust has been in Early Access since July 15, 2024, according to Steam. It currently sits at a Mostly Positive rating there, with 75% of more than 1,700 English-language reviews marked positive. Before that, it pulled in $202,642 on Kickstarter, according to its campaign page, which is more than double the original goal.

For anyone in the mood for a strategy-heavy survival game with real factory-building depth and a darker sci-fi streak, this looks like an easy one to pick up. That’s especially true with version 1.0 set to bring in a full story campaign with multiple endings, a reworked prologue, solar flares, meteor showers, a planning mode, and roads for transport vehicles, according to the Steam page.
