Recent findings in the Steam Workshop have revealed the existence of 14 mods for Project Zomboid that contained obfuscated code capable of generating malicious files. This situation has affected between 500 and 2200 devices, raising concerns among players of this popular survival game. The developer, The Indie Stone, confirmed the users’ reports and took immediate action, including banning the responsible user and removing the implicated mods.
Developers who want to ensure that your computer is secure
The vulnerability was focused solely on the Build 42 branches of Project Zomboid, so players still using the Build 41 version are not exposed to this specific issue. However, the developers warned that it is crucial for any player who has downloaded these mods to take additional precautions, beyond simply uninstalling them. The exact nature of the malicious actions carried out by the generated files has not yet been determined.
Problems began to be reported by several players after the notification that a mod was creating malicious code. In their official post, The Indie Stone noted that the initial investigation found that multiple mods, all related to sounds or music, were compromised. As a result, the studio recommended that users carefully review their list of installed mods.
The situation has opened a debate about security on modding platforms and the need for greater oversight of user-shared content. It is advisable for players to stay alert and keep informed about any updates related to the security of the mods they use. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of taking appropriate security measures in the world of video games, especially in communities as active as that of Project Zomboid.
