The director who defends Harvey Weinstein in her own way: "I hate to say it, but I loved cinema"

For whatever reason, no one has anything good to say about Harvey Weinstein. The film mogul and main figure convicted in the Me Too movement, sentenced to 39 years in prison (from which, barring a miracle, he will not emerge alive), represents the old, moth-eaten Hollywood that smells stale, gives a bit of a creep, and smells like a bar.

However, it is undeniable that he shaped much of the history of cinema, helped films that deserved it (and some that didn’t) win Oscars, and had so much power in his hands that it is inevitable to talk about his era without mentioning him.

However, Jane Campion, director of The Power of the Dog, does not only remember him for his negative aspects, despite being aware of how horrible that is. “Can I say something that is going to be very uncomfortable? Well, it was totally Weinstein’s doing. And yes, Saving Private Ryan should have won it. No one denies that, as a marketing genius, the producer had no rival. Now, as for the rest of things… Well. The Weinstein case is one of the biggest scandals in the history of cinema, on par with the Fatty Arbuckle scandal in the 1920s. A true disgrace that has overshadowed any achievements he made during his career. It is important to remember that he is more than just a pervert, but always without losing sight of that. Undeniably, he is what he is.
