Universal Pictures has officially announced the production of a fourth installment of the iconic saga of The Mummy, scheduled to be released in theaters on May 19, 2028.
This announcement has generated a lot of excitement among fans, especially among ‘millennial’ followers who grew up with the first three films, directed by Stephen Sommers and Rob Cohen, which grossed over 1 billion dollars worldwide.
A highly anticipated return
In an exciting turn for fans, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return to their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, respectively, 20 and 27 years after their last appearances in the franchise.
Fraser, who was recently awarded an Oscar for his performance in The Whale, and Weisz, who participated in the first two installments, have closed deals to reprise their iconic characters, a reason for celebration for the saga’s followers.
The direction of the film will be handled by the creative duo known as Radio Silence, composed of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, who are known for their work on horror projects such as the recent installments of the Scream saga. This change in direction marks a new path for the franchise, which experienced a setback with the reboot starring Tom Cruise in 2017, which did not meet commercial and critical expectations.
While there have been speculations about the plot of The Mummy 4, no concrete details have been revealed so far. However, many remember that the third installment hinted at a possible adventure in Peru, which could provide a new and exciting context for the O’Connells in their next mission. As the release date approaches, fans eagerly await more information about this highly anticipated return to the big screen.
