Amazon Prime Video has a relentless mania for spending hundreds of millions of dollars on its most popular series, having made in the last two years the two most expensive series in history: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the recent Citadel.

However, money is not always synonymous with success, and among the most watched series on the streaming platform, a surprise has just slipped in that very few expected, but which is undoubtedly a very interesting proposal: El grifo.

A European fantasy series

The Griffin is a juvenile fantasy series based on the literary saga Der Greif, written by the German Wolfgang Hohlbein. The writer is a classic of German literature of all kinds, having published more than 400 books, and Der Greif is one of his most prolific and successful works of recent years. The synopsis of the series already makes clear the secret of its success:

“On his 16th birthday, young Mark’s brother Thomas reveals a dark family secret, and shows him the chronicle of the Black Tower, a different world ruled by a creepy creature: the Griffin. Mark also learns that he is the only one who can defeat it, but he doesn’t see himself as a hero and doesn’t want to be one. He has enough trouble with school, adolescence and his first love without fighting a monster that terrorizes living things. However, when Thomas is kidnapped by the Griffin’s minions, Mark and his friends are forced to leave for the world of the Dark Tower.”

Undoubtedly, this is an unexpected European success for Amazon Prime Video, which suits very well a platform that, little by little, is finding its place in the current streaming spectrum. For the moment, it has already surpassed Netflix in Spain, which is no small feat.
