The third season of The Last of Us, HBO’s adaptation based on the acclaimed video game, could mark the end of the series. Casey Bloys, head of content at HBO Max, has suggested that the third installment will not extend beyond the stories presented in the games, unlike the controversial conclusion of Game of Thrones. In statements to Deadline, Bloys mentioned that decisions about the duration of the series are in the hands of the showrunners, although it seems clear that the creative team’s intention is to provide an appropriate closure to the narrative.
Another season is over
Rumors suggest that the third season will be longer than the second, allowing for a more detailed focus on Abby’s journey. Craig Mazin, one of the creators of the series, has confirmed that this new cycle will be more similar in length to the first season, which consisted of nine episodes, as opposed to the seven in the second. However, it has not been specified whether episodes will be dedicated to exploring Ellie’s journey in Santa Barbara.
Despite the resounding success of the first seasons, Bloys indicated that there is no intention to stretch the story unnecessarily. Unlike Game of Thrones, where plot developments were greatly extended, the focus on The Last of Us will adhere to the events of the video game. This indicates an attempt to maintain the integrity and narrative cohesion that has characterized this adaptation, widely recognized as one of the best in its genre.
Although the possibility of exploring the final arc of the game remains open if the creators believe there is enough material, it does not seem that the series has plans to extend to a fourth season. Everything indicates that the conclusion is getting closer, and fans eagerly await to see how this emotional story will be completed.
