Street Fighter 6 is one of the most anticipated fighting games in recent years, so it’s expected that its launch would generate noteworthy numbers, whether positive or negative. Street Fighter V had a disastrous launch, but Capcom managed to fix it with an excellent roadmap that improved the game, and they seem to have learned from that experience for this new installment. Because the numbers speak for themselves, Street Fighter 6 is indeed a resounding success.
To start with, in just three days, Street Fighter 6 has managed to surpass one million players according to the official Japanese account of the game. Additionally, they have mentioned that the Street Fighter franchise has now surpassed 50 million copies sold, making it one of the best-selling franchises in Capcom’s history. To put it into context, the previous installment of the series, Street Fighter V, took three months to sell 1.4 million copies.
Nonetheless, Street Fighter 6 faces a challenging road ahead. Capcom’s President, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, stated in an interview with Famitsu that they expect to sell ten million copies of Street Fighter 6. This would place it in the same sales range as each new installment of the Resident Evil franchise, which typically sells around ten million copies throughout its lifespan, and half of what the Monster Hunter series aspires to achieve, which is around twenty million copies. This makes Street Fighter an integral part of Capcom’s commercial strategy.
Considering all of this, Street Fighter 6 can already be considered a tremendously significant success. Whether it will achieve the sales numbers that Capcom anticipates remains to be seen, but given the game’s excellent reception and initial sales, it seems unlikely that the company will struggle to meet their, based on what has been observed, realistic sales expectations.
