The Matrix Reloaded returns to free streaming: Pluto TV comeback puts it back in the top 10

The Matrix Reloaded is back in the mix. The 2003 Keanu Reeves sequel has returned to Pluto TV’s top 10 most-streamed movies in the U.S., at least going by Pluto TV’s own rankings, giving one of Reeves’ biggest sci-fi hits an unexpected streaming comeback.

It’s not hard to see why the movie still pulls people in. The Matrix Reloaded made more than $738 million worldwide, briefly held the title of the highest-grossing R-rated movie of its time, and picked up Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus’s story with bigger action scenes and a lot more Matrix mythology. The fact that it’s rising on a free, ad-supported service also says something: viewers don’t need yet another subscription to find it. Pluto TV hasn’t released any public viewing figures, though, and it’s still unclear whether the same kind of revival is happening outside the U.S.

Critics never took to The Matrix Reloaded the way they did the 1999 original. Still, the freeway chase has lasted in people’s memories, and so have the film’s ideas about choice, control, systems of power, and machine intelligence. Then there’s the timing. Warner Bros. is in the early stages of a fifth Matrix film from writer-director Drew Goddard, Lana Wachowski is executive producing, and no cast has been confirmed yet. That helps explain why the movie is getting another look now.
