Anna Taylor-Joy stars in the film The Menu

After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and in theaters on November 18, the film “The Menu” arrives on Disney Plus on January 18. Starring the great Anya Taylor-Joy, this is a film that mixes horror, comedy and suspense and has surprised both the public and critics for its originality.

In“The Menu”, a couple, formed by Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), travel to an island on the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States to eat at an exclusive restaurant called Hawthorn, where the lonely and world-renowned Celebrity Chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a luxurious tasting menu for select diners.

The pair are joined by three young and inebriated techies Bryce (Rob Yang), Soren (Arturo Castro) and Dave (Mark St. Cyr), Anne and Richard (Judith Light and Reed Birney), a wealthy older couple who are regular customers, renowned food critic Lillian Bloom (Janet McTeer) and her subservient magazine editor Ted (Paul Adelstein), as well as a famous actor film (John Leguizamo) accompanied by his assistant Felicity (Aimee Carrero).

Hosted by the reception staff, led by General Elsa (Hong Chau), tensions rise at each table as secrets are revealed and unexpected dishes are served during the evening. Without having to wait long between dishes, increasingly violent and wild events begin to take place. The bewilderment of those present is also growing, deducing that the menu prepared by Slowik is nothing like what they have tried so far. Are their lives really in danger or is it all part of the experience?

An original story of horror, suspense and black comedy

Directed by Mark Mylod and written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, it is an original story classified as horror, suspense and black comedy. Y es que el ritmo de la película va in crescendo hasta poner al espectador en una situación de alta tensión. It is a satire on the upper class that can be somewhat reminiscent of the award-winning film “Parasites” or the film “The Game” directed by David Fincher.

The menu has received very positive reviews from experts, with a rating of 76 and 88% positive reviews out of 303 on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, it has also received great approval from the public, grossing $78 million at the international box office.

During the presentation of the film, its director Mark Myloid assured that the crossing of genres is undoubtedly one of the great attractions of “The menu”: “It is a cinematographic journey that mixes satire, comedy and terror with the aim of creating tremendous fear in the viewer. In addition, we wanted to portray that image of an absurd world where you pay a ridiculous amount of money for a meal, without falling into the ridiculousness or the easy criticism of saying that rich people are bad”.

On the other hand, Anya Taylor-Joy also wanted to highlight the originality of the film: “I am absolutely unbearable at watching movies or TV because I guess things, I guess next lines, I guess endings, I guess general themes. Luckily my partner doesn’t mind that much, but most people do. I didn’t know what was going to happen with this one, it kept me on my toes and kept surprising me, and I’m looking for not only unique stories to tell for an audience, but also unique experiences for myself”.

The Menu is now available in both the Disney Plus and Star+ catalogs, streaming platforms that in some countries share premieres and a subscription. If you still don’t have access to either of them, this may be a good opportunity to subscribe. If you purchase an annual Disney+ account now, you can save more than €17 compared to the monthly account.
