The Mummy is going to return with the original actors, but it will erase one of the previous installments from the canon

Debates among fans about which is the best movie within film sagas like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings are common phenomena in the film fandom. However, in the case of The Mummy, there is a clear consensus: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is generally considered the worst in the series. This movie, which premiered in 2008, was subject to criticism and discontent among franchise followers, partly due to the absence of actress Rachel Weisz, whose role was taken over by Maria Bello due to personal commitments.

A movie without Rachel Weisz

The arrival of a new installment, The Mummy 4, has generated expectations among fans. This fourth chapter is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028, and will feature the return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, which could rekindle interest in the saga. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for revitalizing the Scream series, have indicated that the script is solid and promise that the new film will have “all the heart and personality you could expect.”

One of the most controversial decisions made by the new directors has been to clarify that The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is not part of the canon of the series. In the words of Bettinelli-Olpin, “Rachel is in this. That should answer your question,” suggesting that the O’Connell’s adventures in China will be considered irrelevant to the continuity of the saga. Meanwhile, enthusiasm for the new movie seems to be growing, with the aim of doing justice to a franchise that has been very beloved by its fans despite the ups and downs it has faced.
