The narrative designer of the original The Witcher game believes that the game's ending "was a mistake"

Artur Ganszyniec, the renowned story designer of the series The Witcher, has revealed that the ending of the first game does not align with what the narrative team originally intended. In a series of 26 episodes documenting his experience playing the title he helped create nearly 20 years ago, Ganszyniec considers the game’s conclusion to be a “mistake” that shaped the direction of its sequels.

A final that excessively determined subsequent games

The ending in question features Geralt of Rivia closing a deal with King Foltest, only to be interrupted by an assassination attempt by an assassin who turns out to be a witcher. Although this outcome seems to lay fertile ground for a sequel, Ganszyniec explains that the decision to include a closing animation came from the company’s direction and not from the story team, which limited the creative possibilities for The Witcher 2.

According to Ganszyniec, in his vision, the game should have ended with an open ending that would allow exploring Geralt’s future without narrative restrictions. However, the decision to include a sudden ending forced the next installment to follow a more political path and, consequently, to neglect aspects of character development and his personal story. This deviation has been a topic of debate among fans and critics of the saga.

Despite the criticism regarding its ending, it is undeniable that The Witcher 2 was a commercial success, selling over 15 million copies and establishing CD Projekt as one of the most prominent studios in Europe. With the success and impact of the series, fans are eagerly awaiting more information about the upcoming installment, The Witcher 4, and the future of characters like Ciri.
