Jamie Dornan has been chosen to play Strider in the new Lord of the Rings movie titled The Hunt for Gollum. His predecessor, Viggo Mortensen, who made the role iconic in the original trilogy, will not return but has given his blessing to the new actor.

The film, directed and starring Andy Serkis, follows Strider as he searches for Gollum/Sméagol before he reveals the location of the Ring to Sauron.

The movie is still in development

The Hunt for Gollum is set in a part of the rich universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien and represents the first live-action film set in this world since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in 2014. The story will explore the origins of Strider, a key character in the saga, highlighting his role as the leader of the Rangers of the North.

The cast also sees the return of Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, bringing a sense of continuity to the project. Additionally, new cast members have been confirmed, such as Leo Woodwall, who will play Halvard, another ranger who accompanies Strider, and Kate Winslet, who will portray a hobbit named Marigol.

The script is written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, known for their work on the previous trilogies, and the acclaimed director Peter Jackson is the producer. The film is scheduled to premiere on December 17, 2027, coinciding with the release of Avengers: Secret Wars.

This return to the cinema of the franchise promises to attract both fans of the saga and new viewers at a time when interest in the Tolkien universe continues to rise.
