The Odyssey smashes the box office as Nolan’s biggest opening since The Dark Knight

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has swept the box office exactly as was to be expected. By grossing $124.5 million in its first weekend, it has broken records for a film rated for ages 18 and up. Showing the pull Nolan’s name has when it comes to bringing audiences into theaters.

A huge box-office hit

What’s more, it’s a personal record for Nolan himself, since it’s his best opening since 2012, when The Dark Knight Rises made $160 million in its first weekend. That said, it remains far behind the year’s two blockbusters. Toy Story 5, the current leader, made $159 million and Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie was close behind, with a hefty $131 million. Though with a more family-friendly profile, both films had a clear advantage over Nolan’s.

Internationally, The Odyssey has grossed $139.6 million across 73 markets. With a global total of $264.1 million, this makes The Odyssey the biggest opening weekend of Nolan’s career. It even surpassed The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed $249 million worldwide, unadjusted for inflation.

With stellar reviews, but also harsh accusations from the FiSahara Film Festival, which is calling for a boycott of the film for having shot part of the movie in the territory of Western Sahara occupied by Morocco, the film is sparking strong reactions. So it’s reasonable to expect it to keep performing well at the box office, even if the controversy around it keeps growing.
