Warner Bros Discovery has just released some big news: as of May 23, the HBO Max platform will change its name simply to Max in the United States, a change that will come to Spain next year. The announcement comes with the intention of making a new, more complete catalog on the platform, adding all the new Discovery Plus releases.

However, the announcement did not come alone, but with dozens of news: a new series about Harry Potter, another one about Game of Thrones, another one about The Big Bang Theory and much more. But one of the platform’s most striking announcements was that it will premiere The Penguin, the spin-off of The Batman directed by Matt Reeves.

Max has taken advantage of the presentation to show the trailer of The Penguin, and it certainly looks spectacular:

What will The Penguin be about?

The Penguin will focus, as its title suggests, on telling the story of the Dark Knight villain we met in The Batman. Played by Colin Farrell -although it may not look like it under so many layers of makeup-, the series promises to get into the bowels of Gotham’s organized crime and explain the evolution of this nobody turned mafia boss.

In the trailer of the series we have already seen that it will maintain the dark tone of The Batman, and although we have not seen any trace of Robert Pattinson’s superhero, it is more than likely that he will make a cameo or two. However, it will also serve to lay the groundwork for The Batman 2, which will also be directed by Matt Reeves.

“I couldn’t be more excited to continue this exploration of Oz as he rises through the dark ranks to become The Penguin,” explains Colin Farrell. “It will be good to have him back on the streets of Gotham for a little bit of madness and a little bit of mayhem.”

Cast of The Penguin

Some more details about the cast of The Penguin have already surfaced. The officially confirmed characters are as follows:

A few more details about the cast of The Penguin have surfaced. The officially confirmed characters are as follows:

  • Collin Farrell will be Oswald Cobblepot, AKA Oz. Over the course of the series we will see him become Gotham’s mob boss as The Penguin.
  • Cristin Milioti will play Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro in The Batman), who will be The Penguin’s rival for control of Gotham.
  • Clancy Brown will be Salvatore Maroni, Falcone’s rival and another big Gotham mob boss.
  • Michael Zegen will be Alberto Falcone, Carmine Falcone’s son and Sofia’s brother.
  • John Turturro will appear as Carmine Falcone, most likely in flashbacks.
  • Other actors whose roles have not been revealed are Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Michael Zegen, James Madio and Scott Cohen.
  • It remains to be confirmed if, finally, Robert Pattinson will appear at some point as Batman.

When will The Penguin be released?

The Penguin will be Max’s first original series, and although the platform will change its name in the US in May, it will not officially reach the rest of the world until 2024. Therefore, the premiere of the series is expected to arrive in early 2024.

The fiction will have eight episodes lasting approximately one hour, and will start right where The Batman left off. Thus, we can be sure that it will serve as a connector to the next movie.
